Nutrition and exercise are confusing. Foods bearing the perceived health halo include everything from broccoli to butter depending on who you talk to. One group preaches ancestral eating while another has you eliminating all your favorite staples. At the same time, fitness influencers on every platform from Youtube to social media to podcasts preach different diet trends or exercise regimens to grow muscle, drop fat and live your best life. Make no mistake, the fitness and nutrition industries are multi-billion dollar industries profiting off our desire to build the perfect body.
Yet, if we are spending more money than ever on our health, why are we still not reaching the goals we so eagerly set out to achieve? Here are a few main reasons:
Simply having a goal of “eating better” or “getting in shape” isn’t enough to elicit a change. Rather, we need to have an intrinsic reason for seeking change. Maybe it’s playing a game of tag with the kids without becoming winded. Or, perhaps you’re no longer content to sit on the sidelines watching peers compete. When your goal is not well-defined, the appropriate steps cannot be put into place for you to succeed.
Every goal is unique and every body is unique. What works for a co-worker, family member or friend isn’t always going to work for you. In fact, it probably won’t. It’s only through gaining an understanding of nutrition and the various macro- and micro-nutrients and how they apply to you, is how goals are achieved.
Diet and exercise trends and fads create an appealing culture and have a way of reigning us in. It’s human nature to want to be part of a group. We like to be “keto,” “Paleo,” “vegan” or go to CrossFit, or Soulcycle or Orange Theory. And while all of those groups certainly offer benefits, are they the right approaches for you? Maybe...but maybe not.
And if something isn’t working for you, why continue? Often it’s because the fear of leaving the group keeps us returning to the same class week after week, fighting through fatigue, injury or even boredom. Similarly, we often prescribe to a certain diet simply because our favorite celebrity or fitness influencer swears by it. We eat foods we don’t like at times that don’t work for us and wind up feeling deprived and ultimately defeated all because we are afraid to try something new.
BLK Coaching’s mission is to offer a safe and science-backed approach to nutrition and exercise coaching that improves the quality of life for clients at all stages of their journey.
BLK Coaching offers one-on-one nutrition and exercise coaching designed to address your individual needs. Together, we design a program tailored to meet your goals both nutritionally and physically. Fad diets and restrictive meal plans are destined to fail, which is why we work together to include the foods you love and work in your lifestyle while educating you on the basic nutritional science of the macronutrients.
At the same time, we discuss your current exercise routine and assess its usefulness in achieving your goals. There’s no reason to run if you can’t stand running and there is no purpose in spending hundreds of dollars on classes that don’t benefit you in the end. Local clients are welcome to participate in one-on-one or group training while other options are available for remote clients.
Nutrition and exercise can be confusing, but it doesn’t have to be. BLK Coaching makes eating and exercising enjoyable and easy to understand while helping you become the best version of yourself.
A few months ago my trainer Alison approached me about being a test subject for nutrition coach. Alison had met Bonnie and loved her, she said I would love her too. In reality I think Alison worried my sugar addiction and solid sugar diet was an issue. I kept an open mind, a food journal, and jumped on board. I have to say the improvements in my overall energy and how I feel each day has immensely changed. I wake up everyday feeling ready to roll instead of requiring multiple cups of coffee to get started. Bonnie has given me tons of ideas for snacks and meals that are have pushed me to try new things I have found I actually like. I would highly recommend Bonnie as a nutrition coach to anyone who is looking to improve their energy level and overall life with food. Bonnie is encouraging, easy to talk to, and never makes you feel bad about what your current diet looks like.

Bonnie trained me for two years, twice a week.
Her training was customized exclusively for me, which was exactly what I needed. If a certain workout didn’t seem to suit my needs or ability, she was able to change it on the spot so I wouldn’t lose any training time. The intensity level was built up progressively so that my body could move forward weekly. Although the ultimate goal was bone strengthening, she mixed up the workouts to keep them more interesting and always made sure to challenge my ability. (Some of us need that extra push!) In conclusion, She was the perfect trainer for me.

“You can’t eat that”, “That has sugar in it”, “That fruit is full of carbs”, “You must exercise more”, “You do Keto?” “You are a vegan?” These are common statements you hear from people that try to direct you into a diet system that they believe is best. Normally it is only best for them (maybe?).
I came upon Bonnie in an odd fashion. My client bought her horse from her this past winter. We spent the day together getting to know each other and the horse. About a month later, and months of struggling with my “diet” I reached out to her.
I am a middle aged, quite fit, very healthy, 52 year old woman that was looking to lose 10-12 lbs and how to maintain my health as I am aging. As we age our bodies change: metabolism, muscle, hormones etc. I wanted to lose some pounds but, most importantly, I wanted to eat and exercise in a way that would help me have a healthier aging process.
The most positive aspect about Bonnie is that she took the “diet” or lifestyle I was current doing and didn’t tell me I was doing everything wrong and I had to go run 10 miles a day and eat only lettuce!!! She took my current eating and exercise program and she tweaked it until we found something that works. With that in mind you must be open minded to change your food and exercise. Not only does she set up exercises and help you plan your food, but she sincerely wants to know how you are doing. Did you stress eat this week? Were you too busy to exercise? …..and so on. I am a professional trainer and coach (dressage ) in my profession you must take what is given to you and tweak it until you get the results you want!
I can sing her praises all day long but in the end my pants are bigger and my stamina is longer and stronger. I am very fortunate to have her as my coach, nutritionist and fellow dressage rider.
